Strength and Resistance Training

What is it

Resistance training builds muscle strength. It traditionally involves the use of weights, but can be achieved through a range of techniques. In men, this form of training generally develops the size and definition of muscles.

What are the Benefits

  • Helps control obesity and fatness
  • Increase or replace muscle tissue
  • Increase bone mineral density – decreases risk of osteoporosis
  • Increase joint stability and strength
  • Improve posture
  • Increase energy expenditure
  • Decrease risk of injury
  • Decrease blood pressure and diabetes

Methods

  • Body weight exercises – use your own body weight to provide resistance
  • Stability exercises – exercises the require different muscles to work together to promote balance and joint stability
  • Free weights – exercises that target particular muscle groups using weights to provide resistance

Variations

  • Weight - The amount of resistance
  • Speed – the slower, the greater the control required
  • Repetitions – How many times you do the exercise followed by a rest
  • Sets – The number of times you do a set of Repetitions followed by a rest
